FIRS7
The FIRS7 series presents seven influential African leaders, arranged by the year they first assumed national leadership: Nkrumah (Ghana, 1952–1966), Lumumba (Congo, 1960–1961), Azikiwe (Nigeria, 1963–1966), Nyerere (Tanzania, 1961–1985), Sankara (Burkina Faso, 1983–1987), Mandela (South Africa, 1994–1999), and Johnson Sirleaf (Liberia, 2006–2018).
This collection is not a chronological record of the first nations to gain independence. Instead, FIRS7 is a symbolic grouping, chosen to highlight leaders whose vision and courage embody sovereignty, resilience, and cultural pride. Each portrait reflects not only the likeness of a leader but also the dignity of African identity and the collective memory of independence struggles.
By focusing on the symbolic weight of these figures rather than strict historical order, the series emphasizes how their leadership resonates across generations. Their faces are not only portraits but emblems of collective memory—reminders of the values of freedom, solidarity, and identity that continue to shape Africa’s narrative.
FIRS7 is both an artistic and conceptual project: a celebration of independence and African identity through portraiture, honoring seven remarkable leaders who continue to inspire.
