Narrative
The pentrait pays tribute to Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first President and one of the most influential figures of Africa’s early independence era. Serving as President from 1963 to 1966, Azikiwe stood among the continent’s pioneering post‑colonial leaders who helped shape the political direction of newly sovereign African states.
Often called “Zik of Africa,” Azikiwe championed nationalism, education, and the idea of a modern, unified Nigeria. His influence extended beyond politics into journalism and intellectual life, where he advocated for African self‑determination and cultural pride. As with many leaders of the first generation, his tenure unfolded during a turbulent period marked by regional tensions, competing visions of nationhood, and the challenges of forging unity in a diverse new republic.
The title Nyanyelugu — an Igbo honorific meaning “the great elder” or “venerable one” — reflects the stature Azikiwe held for many: a respected elder statesman whose contributions, debates, and contradictions remain woven into Nigeria’s early independence story.
