Created during Nkwaye’s early noire period, this work captures the tension between solid anatomy and dissolving form — a moment where the figure seems to crouch at the edge of becoming something else. The lower body is rendered with muscular realism, while the upper torso fractures into smoke like abstraction, hinting at transformation, erosion, or emergence.

The monochrome palette reflects the artist’s preoccupation at the time with shadow, distortion, and the emotional weight of the human form. Even in these early explorations, Nkwaye’s instinct for contrast is unmistakable: the grounded physicality below, the unravelling energy above.
