Narrative
OMUKAZENDU draws its name from okujepisa omukazendu, a historical Himba custom in which a husband offers his wife to an honoured guest as a gesture of trust and hospitality. Within this framework, intimacy becomes a symbolic extension of alliance‑building, clan solidarity, and communal generosity.
Traditionally, the practice also carried pragmatic functions: in cases of male infertility, a guest could ensure the continuation of a family line without public shame. Embedded in a society shaped by polygamy, arranged marriages, and pastoral life, okujepisa omukazendu reflects a worldview where marriage, lineage, and social cohesion are tightly interwoven.
Omukazendu holds this tension in view—honoring the cultural context while prompting questions about consent, autonomy, and the evolving roles of Himba women within their own heritage.
