Narrative
NSOROMA, meaning “star” in Asante Twi, focuses on the quiet strength and individuality shaped through traditional scarification. The portrait presents the subject in a turned posture, allowing the patterned marks along the shoulder and back to come into view. These markings, rendered with careful stippling, highlight scarification not as decoration, but as a form of personal and cultural identity.
The artist places emphasis on texture—both of the skin and the surrounding space—inviting the viewer to consider how these raised patterns hold stories of heritage, belonging, and self-definition. The scars appear integrated into the natural lines of the body, suggesting that they are not additions but extensions of the person’s lived experience.
Rather than romanticising the practice, the artwork approaches it with clarity and respect. The subject’s calm presence encourages viewers to look closely at the craft, intention, and symbolism behind the marks. In this way, NSOROMA becomes a study of how tradition can illuminate the body, much like a star marks its place in the sky—quietly, confidently, and with enduring significance.
