AKOFENA

AKOFENA

H2O COLOUR

Narrative

Akofena takes its name from the Akan sword of authority — here reimagined as the title of a spacecraft, a vessel carrying the weight of lineage, courage, and ceremonial power. We may not expect Asante space travel without technology, yet the painting suggests that heritage, gold, and the resolve of warriors could propel such a journey just as meaningfully.

Inspired by the clan line up for Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II at the burial of Mamponghene Nana Osei Bonsu II, the figures stand in dignified formation before the looming craft. Their patterned garments root the scene in tradition even as the backdrop pushes into speculative possibility.

By merging ancestral ritual with speculative flight, Akofena imagines a future carried not by machines alone, but by authority, identity, and the enduring presence of Asante tradition.
